History of Casa San Matteo

With its vaulted ceilings, thick walls, elegant arches, and niches, this 18th-century villa stands as an impressive example of classical Mediterranean architecture, complete with a distinctively Moorish influence. Casa San Matteo has been welcoming travellers for nearly a century; indeed, the prestigious Michelin Guide documented its heritage as a guest house as early as 1937

Need to Know

There are approximately 100 steps down from the nearest car drop-off point or bus stop. The steps along Via Monte continue down to the village centre and the main beach, which are about a 10 to 15-minute walk away.

Getting to Positano can be quite a challenge; however, it is amply rewarded by the beauty of this unique place. We have summarised some travel information on this page. Please note that the information provided may change without notice. You are kindly requested to verify details directly with the transport operators before making your travel arrangements.

The main transport hubs for Positano are Naples and Salerno airports. Naples, Salerno, and Sorrento can also be reached by train.

Arriving from Naples Airport

We recommend booking a taxi in advance. We can arrange a private transfer either by executive car (up to 3 passengers) or minivan (up to 8 passengers).

As an alternative to a taxi, there is a private shuttle bus service from the airport (Curreri Viaggi).

Arriving from Naples City

A local commuter train, the Circumvesuviana, connects Naples to Sorrento. From Sorrento to Positano, you can either book a taxi or catch the SITA bus line.

Arriving from Salerno by Sea

There are numerous ferry routes from Salerno to Positano, with fares costing approximately €18.00 and a journey time of around 70 minutes. Please check the online timetable for confirmation.

Travelling to Positano by sea is a wonderful experience. You will sail for just over an hour along one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Please note, however, that ferry services to Positano may be suspended in the event of rough weather. Boats depart Salerno from Concordia Dock, located 800 metres from the railway station.

Porters are available upon the ferry’s arrival in Positano. You can request to have your luggage taken directly to Casa San Matteo, saving you from having to carry it yourself.
